A Treatment Model That Sets Us Apart

Eating disorder treatment at The Meadows Ranch is about far more than food, and our treatment methods extend far beyond group and one-on-one therapy sessions. Our patients learn the skills and methods necessary to sustain the recovery by focusing on education, resiliency, and self-regulation. Treatment is led by a well-qualified multidisciplinary team dedicated to providing assistance and support 24 hours a day. We blend proven methods like Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and a focus on trauma resolution with nutrition counseling, equine therapy, psychoeducation, expressive arts, meal exposure therapy, and more to create a customized treatment plan that meets each individual’s specific needs.

Therapies & Services

The Meadows Ranch Difference for Eating Disorder Treatment

We work with patients to get them physically and mentally able to do the work necessary for recovery. Offering inpatient, residential, and partial-hospitalization levels of care, our professional team of psychiatrists, registered nurses, master’s-level therapists, dietitians, and other clinical staff are equipped to handle even acute cases where feeding tubes are necessary.

Our multi-pronged approach includes treatment for co-occurring disorders, staff trained in trauma work, and a focus on calming the mind to prepare patients to confront their eating disorders. Our program has many distinctive features including a unique nutrition approach, state-of-the-art Brain Center, Survivors Week, cutting-edge metabolic cart, accredited academic program for those in our Adolescent Program, family work, and a bookstore.

Brain Center

Patients learn to use neurofeedback, biofeedback, and other scientific tools to calm and self-regulate, preparing them to begin the deeper work of recovery sooner.

Nutrition Approach

Patients spend time in our spacious kitchens daily, planning, prepping, and serving meals. We’ve found that this type of exposure best prepares them for long-term success.

Equine Therapy

Equine therapy also allows patients to apply new knowledge in a safe environment and form authentic connections — not just with horses, but also with peers and staff.

Our Facility Dog

At The Meadows Ranch, it’s hard not to notice that one member of our clinical team is a little, well, “hairier” than the rest. That’s Cowboy, our facility dog from Canine Companions for Independence.

Academics

Academic progress doesn’t have to be paused while you seek help. Alta Independent, our online learning partner, offers nearly 300 courses for middle school and high school students to help ensure our patients don’t miss a beat.

The Meadows Model

The Meadows Model is at the core of all Meadows Behavioral Healthcare treatment programs, including The Meadows Ranch. It is based on the pioneering work of Meadows Senior Fellow Pia Mellody, one of the preeminent authorities in the fields of addiction and relationships, and her Developmental Model of Immaturity. We use these innovative therapeutic techniques to identify and treat the underlying trauma of addictive and dysfunctional processes.

“Many people shy away from seeking treatment because they think they can handle their problems on their own. Some feel ashamed to struggle with mental illness. Yet there is nothing to be ashamed of in battling a real, life-threatening illness that you did not cause nor choose. You can, however, choose to get better.” – Jenni Schaefer

Meadows Senior Fellow Jenni Schaefer also impacts treatment at The Meadows Ranch. An eating disorder treatment advocate, she is also the author of several books, including Life Without Ed: How One Woman Declared Independence from Her Eating Disorder and How You Can Too, and she contributed to anthologies like the Chicken Soup for the Soul series. An ambassador with the National Eating Disorders Association, she is a sought-after presenter on eating disorders, trauma, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
